Effect of implant surface characteristics on cellular response: a literature review
Park Ji-Sun

Abstract
Cell adhesion to implant biomaterials has become of great importance to the prosthetic success of implants because it plays a major role during the initial phase of the biological response to implants. It is reported that this cellular process is mediated by the absorbed protein layer. In particular, many previous studies have revealed that surface characteristics of implants influence the cellular behavior associated with integration to the surrounding tissue. Therefore, the surface of an implant is a critical factor for determining its biocompatibility and osseointegration. This literature review investigates various implant surface characteristics such as chemical composition, wettability, surface charge and topography and discusses their synergistic effect on the cellular response to implants.
